VOLLEYBALL SLOVENIA- GOODBYE COACH ANDREA GIANI
Slovenia looking for new coach, Giani parts ways with European vice champions
News from the National Federations Ljubljana, Slovenia, January 26, 2017. Italian Volleyball legend Andrea Giani has announced he is parting ways with Slovenia men’s national team. His contract expired in July 2016, shortly after Slovenia claimed top honours at the FIVB World League Group 3 Finals in Frankfurt. The 46-year-old Volleyball legend who helped Slovenia claim a historic silver medal at the 2015 CEV Volleyball European Championship in Bulgaria and Italy, will now take on new challenges.
“Despite our efforts Andrea decided not to extend the contract as head coach of our men’s team. He announced his decision last night, together with his staff. We are sincerely thankful to Andrea for everything he did for Slovenian Volleyball and Slovenian sports in general,” the President of the Volleyball Federation of Slovenia, Metod Ropret said after Giani’s announcement.
Giani replaced Luka Slabe at the helm of Slovenia in March 2015. He said goodbye to ‘his’ boys with the following words: “I want to simply thank you for this opportunity you have given to me and for this great experience we lived together. Through many sacrifices, we created a Team with a Great Identity. Today we can feel proud of what we have achieved and I hope it will serve to you to write your future.” The Volleyball Federation of Slovenia will now be looking for a new head coach for their men’s national team, which this season will compete in the second round of European qualifications to the 2018 FIVB World Championship, the 2017 FIVB World League and the Final Round of the 2017 CEV European Championship. An open public tender for the position will follow in due course.
