COMMISSION CRUCIAL TO THE DEVELOPMENTECHNICAL AND COACHINGT OF VOLLEYBALL
The FIVB Technical and Coaching Commission met today in Lausanne.
The FIVB President was joined by the President of the Commission, New Zealand’s Hugh McCutcheon (former coach of the US men’s national volleyball team who won gold in Beijing in 2008); France’s Philippe Blain (former coach of the France men’s national volleyball team and assistant coach of the Japan men's national volleyball team); Italy’s Giovanni Guidetti (former coach of the Netherlands women’s national volleyball team who won silver in the 2015 European Championship); Great Britain’s Olympic women's coach Audrey Cooper; and the coach of the Egypt men’s national volleyball team Sherif El Shemerly. Also present was Toshiro Endo, a team manager with the Japan Volleyball Association's women's national teams.
At the meeting, President Graça said:
"We count on the Technical and Coaching Commission to assist us in further implementing the Nucleus Project, approved by the FIVB Board of Administration, by helping us identify the key countries for further investments in order to develop the national teams and reach the local markets for the future benefit of the sport.
"We also rely on your experience and expertise in implementing one of the FIVB's key development pillars - coaching support to the National Federations - as we need to make sure that they have experienced coaches. This will increase the performance of the national teams and bring more fans and spectators to the sport."
The improvement of coaching development and education, including the online education courses at all levels of development, was one of the topics for discussion as the FIVB continues to modernise all the aspects of its work.
The members of the Commission were also informed about the FIVB’s commitment to digital transformation, which will allow it to engage with the fans from all over the world and share the new content with them. The Commission also talked about raising the profile of individual players as a way of creating heroes and idols to attract fans.
President Graça and the Commission also discussed technical advancements in place for the key FIVB events, such as the Challenge System, which was very successful at the at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and has led to improved officiating. The FIVB is also investigating methods of optimising the volleyball calendar and reviewing the world ranking system.
