Drawing of Lots shapes up interesting fixtures for #EuroVolleyU17W
2018 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship – Women
Sofia, Bulgaria, February 13, 2018. The Drawing of Lots for the 2018 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship – Women took place on Tuesday morning at Vitosha Park Hotel in Sofia, Bulgaria. Sofia is the only city hosting the tournament, which is to run from April 13 to 21. The Drawing of Lots divided 12 National teams in two pools of six each.
CEV Board of Administration member and Jury President Zdeslav Barac supervised the Drawing of Lots ceremony together with European Sports Organising Commission (ESOC) member, Mr Slobodan Milosevic and high-ranking officials of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation.
Next to hosts Bulgaria, the competition features the eight winners of the 2nd Round qualifiers held in January - Romania, Italy, Slovenia, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Turkey, Belarus - as well as the three best 2nd placed teams from these same tournaments, i.e. The Netherlands, Hungary and Germany. Teams coming from the same qualifying tournament cannot play each other in the pool phase of the Final Round.
The 12 participating teams were drawn as follows:
Pool I: Bulgaria, Russia, Belarus, Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary
Pool II: Turkey, Romania, Ukraine, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany
The first and second placed teams of both preliminary pools will be playing semi-finals before competing for the medals. The third and fourth-placed teams from each pool will be playing for places 5 to 8, whilst the fifth and sixth-placed teams will leave the tournament upon completion of the pool phase.
Most of these teams return to Sofia where last year they contested the inaugural U16 Women’s European Championship where Italy claimed gold with Russia and Bulgaria completing the podium on that occasion.
“I want to say a big thank you to the CEV and to President Aleksandar Boričić, because for the second year running they have shown their trust in our ability to host a continental championship. I obviously would like to thank the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well and especially our country’s Sports Minister, Mr Krasen Kralev, who has always supported us over the years and provided the opportunity to host such high-profile tournaments as this one,” said the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation, Mr Stanislav Nikolov.
“I am very happy to be back in Bulgaria again. The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation is known all over Europe as a great host of major Volleyball championships and we are very pleased that it will organise this so important competition in April. We hope that we will have many interesting matches and we will again live an unforgettable tournament, as it was the case last year with the U16 competition,” said CEV Board of Administration member and Jury member, Zdeslav Barac.
“I want to wish good luck to all of the participating teams. Volleyball tournaments organised by the Bulgarian Federation have always been on a very high level, and we are confident that it will be just the same again in April, so we look forward to the beginning of the championship and let the best team celebrate with gold on April 21,” said ESOC member Slobodan Milosevic.
#EuroVolleyU17W will take place in Sofia from April 13 to 21 at Hristo Botev sports hall and at the training hall of the iconic Arena Armeec. In the summer of 2017, Bulgaria hosted the historic first European Championship for U16 women’s national teams, where the hosts settled for the bronze medal. The enormous interest in the matches held at Hristo Botev hall impressed once again the European Volleyball community, which was the main reason why Bulgaria has now the honour of hosting the U17 Finals.
A detailed match programme will follow in due course.
